Retired General Manager Runs for Seat on the LARPD Board

Timothy Barry, retired General Manager of the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District, is running for a seat on the LARPD Board of Directors in the upcoming November 3rd General Election.

"I'm running to bring seasoned leadership, judgement and comprehensive knowledge of the District and the community to the Board,” says Barry.

Barry is a retired General Manager of the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District. He is a 23-year resident of Livermore and retired as head of the District in 2018 after 15 years at the helm.  Barry hasserved in the parks and recreation departments of various cities and special districts in California since 1977.

His career spanned 45 years following his college education with a BA in Recreation Administration and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from CSU Long Beach.

“My interest in running for the LARPD Board stems from my strong desire to serve the District that I love in the community that I love.” Barry says. “I’ll work for fun programs and activities that inspire and educate, for safe and beautiful parks and trails that exercise and relax us, and for social opportunities to bring us together.”

Barry describes himself as a fiscal conservative.  “My strong fiscal background is a good fit for this position on the board,” he says.

Under Barry’s leadership at LARPD, the District completed the $26 million Robert Livermore Community Center, Bruno Canziani Park, Holdener Park, Cayetano Park, Artificial Turf Fields and Arena Cover at Robertson Park, Sycamore Grove Trail Repaving Project, numerous trail segments and several playground replacement projects at neighborhood parks.

A Long Beach native, Barry pursued Parks and Recreation as a career from a strong instinct to serve the community and help to improve quality of life.

Married to Claudia for 50 years, he coached his two sons, Brian and Sean in youth sports and was able to enjoy family recreation at public parks and trails. He was Director of two parks and recreation agencies in Woodland and Rohnert Park before settling in at LARPD in 2003 as General Manager. Barry served as statewide President of the California Parks and Recreation Society in 2014-2015.

Since retirement, Barry plays music in local groups and has been a member of the Livermore Rotary Club, and Livermore Amador Symphony Association, where he is still on the board as Past President.
